The Importance of Not Waiting
“I’ll get life insurance later.”
It’s something I hear all the time.
Maybe you’re young and healthy. Maybe you’re focused on paying off debt. Maybe you’re raising your children, buying a home, building your career, or simply trying to keep up with everyday expenses.
Life insurance can feel like something that can wait.
But waiting can come with a risk that most of us don't think about until it's too late.
The Reality of Waiting
According to LIMRA and Life Happens' 2025 Insurance Barometer Study, only 51% of Americans ages 18–75 report having life insurance, while approximately 100 million Americans say they need life insurance or need more coverage than they currently have.
And one of the biggest reasons people aren't getting covered?
They think it costs too much.
In fact, 72% of Americans overestimate the actual cost of a basic term life insurance policy.
For younger adults, the misconception is even more surprising. Healthy adults ages 18–30 estimated the cost of a $250,000, 20-year level-term policy at roughly 10–12 times the actual median cost.
That means someone could be putting off coverage because they assume they can't afford it—without ever actually finding out what their options are.
And unfortunately, waiting doesn't guarantee that you'll always have the same options later.
I've Personally Seen Why Waiting Matters
This isn't just something I talk about because I'm an insurance professional.
I've seen what can happen when someone decides to wait.
I once had a client who had the opportunity to get life insurance. He ultimately told me he wasn't interested and decided not to move forward.
Unfortunately, he passed away before he ever had the opportunity to change his mind.
His wife was left behind with their children, the household bills, and the financial responsibilities they had shared.
And that's the part about life insurance that I don't think people always understand.
The bills don't stop because someone dies.
The mortgage or rent is still due.
The car payment is still due.
Utilities still have to be paid.
Children still need food, clothing, childcare, and everything else that comes with raising a family.
And on top of all of that, there is the emotional weight of losing someone you love.
I can't go back and change what happened for that family.
But that experience reinforced something for me:
Don't wait to protect the people who depend on you.
Your Health Today Matters
Another reason I encourage people to explore life insurance sooner rather than later is that your health can change.
Today, you might be healthy and qualify for favorable rates.
Years from now, you could have a completely different health history.
That doesn't necessarily mean you won't qualify for coverage. It simply means you may have fewer options or pay more depending on your circumstances.
And age matters too. In general, life insurance becomes more expensive as you get older.
That's why I don't believe you should wait until you think you need life insurance.
By then, you may wish you had started sooner.
Life Insurance Isn't About Expecting to Die
I know that talking about death isn't comfortable.
Nobody wants to sit around thinking about what would happen if they weren't here tomorrow.
But that's exactly why life insurance matters.
It's not really about death. It's about the people you're leaving behind.
It's about your spouse.
Your children.
Your parents.
Your business partner.
The people who depend on your income, your support, and your presence.
Life insurance can give your family something incredibly valuable during one of the hardest moments of their lives:
financial breathing room.
It can help give them time to grieve instead of immediately having to figure out how they're going to pay the bills.
Think of It as One Last Act of Love
I've always believed that life insurance is one of the most meaningful ways you can show your family that you care about them—even after you're gone.
You may not be there to hug them.
You may not be there to answer the phone.
You may not be there to help them financially.
But you can make a decision today that says:
“I thought about you. I planned for you. I wanted to make sure you would be okay.”
Years from now, your family may never know how much you sacrificed to make sure that policy stayed in force.
But they'll know you cared enough to prepare.
And if the worst ever happens, they may be incredibly grateful that you didn't wait.
Don't Assume You Can't Afford It
If you've been putting off life insurance because you think it's too expensive, don't guess.
Get a quote.
Ask questions.
Find out what options are actually available to you.
LIMRA's research shows that millions of Americans recognize they need life insurance but still don't have enough coverage.
You don't have to start with the biggest policy.
You don't have to know exactly what you need before having the conversation.
You simply need to take the first step.
Because none of us know what tomorrow holds.
But we can choose what we do today.
Don't wait until your family is left wishing you had gotten covered.
Don't wait until your health changes.
Don't wait until the price is higher.
And most importantly, don't wait until it's too late.
Life insurance is more than a policy.
It's a promise to the people you love.
Protect What Matters. Plan for What's Ahead.
